HIATUS
It's been AGES since I've had the time to write anything about my life, let alone fandom. A lot happened in my private life and even though fandom is always present in my life, I did no write about anything. Anything at all. This makes me sad and I intend to change this habit, since there was a time when I truly loved blogging, even if it was mostly about nonsensical things.
We'll see how I will do, until then farewell!

IT'S BEEN NOTHING BUT MUSIC, REAL LIFE, PHOTOS OF RL & A LITTLE FEMINISM AS A SIDE DISH
I am so not writing about fandom any more, it's sad! Really sad, I'm actually appalled by myself. This needs to change and I intend to start that change tomorrow, but for now a short round up of what I've blogged about in the past three months.... (WOW, so little. Damn!!) I also really need to write about Final Fantasy: The Four Heroes of Light, because it is JUST TOO CUTE and has crowns. Crowns ♥!

STARTING WITH SOME MUSIC )
I played a bit Odin Sphere, and did not just use Gwendolyn to amuse myself - which I did last weekend at home ♥!! - but actually got further into Velvet's story. I actually defeated Wagner at the second attempt - which greatly surprised me because I am crap with Velvet - and the story bits made me appreciate her a bit more. It's not that she or her story are boring, I guess it is just that she did not intrigue me much when I saw her during the other's storylines and her own - while being pretty interesting and shedding light upon some things - is just not as compelling as the other ones were. What's pretty funny is that the chapter I played today also involved Gwendolyn and I ended up loving and pretty much adoring my favourite character of the game even more and while the chapter brought me closer to Velvet, too, Gwen just got infinitely more wonderful and tragic!

A friend and me had a huge and total fit of laughter!

BEING ERICA: FINAL EPISODE

(no spoilers, so no worries)
It was PERFECT. I am truly sad that it was the final episode, but IMHO the series did everything right and it was the perfect ending for a great television series. I'm sad to have to live without Erica Strange now, but as Dr. Tom would say: "In the face of difficulty lies opportunity."

8 REASONS TO WATCH 'A SINGLE MAN'

50 THINGS I LOVE ABOUT SKINS
This is utterly amazing and captures so many things I loved about the four seasons of the series too. I can identify with them so much. How broken we all are and yet how beautiful.

I know I have already spammed you with enough links about racebending and the plea not to see the Avatar: The Last Airbender film - which I have definitely decided not to watch now (under any circumstances, that I would not pay for the film was clear from the start), not even for Dev Patel, who is great - but [livejournal.com profile] ssj10's recent post about the topic really made me cry. She conveyed her feelings so beautifully and outlined the horrible situation equally well. Please take a few minutes to read THESE ARE MY COLOURS, think and then judge for yourself.
[Please read this, even if you are not interested in the cartoon Avatar at all, read this essay, which is about so much more than racebending. It is about how minorities are presented in the American cultural sphere or rather how they are not represented.]

[personal profile] bookshop wrote a post about THE PUBLISHING INDUSTRY ERASING RACE FROM THEIR COVERS. I never consciously thought about these things, but I want to grow as a person and be someone who notices these things and almost more important who speaks out against those things.
There is a talk ABOUT THE DANGERS OF THE SINGLE STORY by the Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie.

And since the film The Last Airbender's release date was on the 1st of July, there have been many essays and blog posts about the racebending issue again. Here a few of those I read, liked and really want to share:

FACEPAINT by Q. Le on tumblr which made me realise that I was a bit hypocritical by not seeing that Prince of Persia is pretty racefail too, when it comes to not having any Persian actors portraying Persian characters. (But sometimes I just don't think.)

N.K. Jemisin commented on the movie saying IT'S NOT THE SAME STORY.

Film!TLA is not the same story as cartoon!ATLA because the latter was groundbreaking in its treatment of race and culture, and the former reinforces all the old bad paradigms — brown people relegated to background irrelevance, victimhood, or villainy; white people to the rescue at the forefront. This is not just a problem because of Hollywood’s (well, America’s) long history of marginalizing and objectifying people of color, “yellowface”, etc. It’s also problematic because in this case, changing the race of the characters actually changes the story.

ANOTHER TRUE BLOOD SEASON 3 TRAILER

I WANNA DO BAD THINGS WITH YOU CAUSE IT HURTS SO GOOD )

I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am about the new season. So much Eric and Alcie looks hot and awesome and I'm gonna love him. I am curious about Tara's vampire affair and what they're gonna do with Lafayette - now that he's still alive - and what exactly is gonna happen to the baby vampire (Jessica's really grown on me.)

I saw Prince of Persia: Sands of Time when mum visited and really liked the film. The story is not that great, but not bad either and I adored the visuals. And the action scenes and stunts were all pretty and awesome, so I liked the film very much.

AND THERE'S THIS AWESOME ACTRESS IN THE MOVIE THAT I CANNOT GET ENBOUGH OF LATELY ;D MEET THE LOVELY GEMMA ARTERTON. AGAIN. --> FEISTY, SEXY AND UTTERLY ADORABLE TAMINA )

TOTAL ROUND UP
Dear The Big Bang Theory,
Ever since Penny and Leonard became a couple for real, you lost charm and wit.
I'm sorry.
n.

PS:And yeah I can see Penny/Sheldon because theirs is the most interesting relationship on the show. Take this!
(Sometimes Sheldon is so cute I want to eat him. And sometimes he's so unnerving I could kill him. I seem to be into that kind of characters a lot these days, concerning my love for Christopher Chant or Tony Stark. Both insufferable prats. ♥!)

Grey's Anatomy
I have been rambling on twitter about GA, so if you want quotes and more specific mini-rants go there. Only a some short facts about my lovelies.

Meredith Love her. Always have, always will. (I love that they focus on other characters a lot these days, but I want some interesting shit to happen to Meredith again soon.)
Christina Same here, but I hate Hunt and I hate her and Hunt together.
Callie & Arizona THE WORST HAPPENED. THE FUCKING WORST AND I WAS SO INCREDIBLY HAPPY FOR THEM...

I am currently looking through the answers of Read it's blogroll where s/he asked for 10 books that are a must read and I'm finding the answers quite interesting. I also really like that a lot of people put in Lycidas by Christoph Marzi. I haven't finished the series yet, but I quite like his style. Sometimes it's a bit too much, but I very much like his ideas and characters. And also how he puts things :)

[personal profile] bookshop wrote about Cult of Awesomeness surrounding decent males in our society not long ago. (You can see that since I added her, I am reading all of her meta.) And even though I knew some of the examples she gives before, reading the entry itself and the articles she links to makes me sick and despise all humanity.
But only in a way, because I know there are lots of great people out there too. Like [personal profile] bookshop herself, many people from [community profile] metafandom and last but not at all least YOU and YOU.

This kinda made me gag and I really want to read the articles bookshop linked to.

A lighthearted and funny attempt on a similar topic by Felicia Day (and another reason to be totally awed by her ;D)

The last Bones episode I have seen was called "THE WITCH IN THE WARDROBE". I adore the show, I really really do. The show is hilarious, does not take itself too seriesly (;D) and has so much charm and lots of ♥!

I WANT MY FAVOURITE COUPLE IN The Good Wife TO BE 'FOR REAL' ;^; (1x20)

Iron-Man-Double-Feature: [5th of May]
(Minor Spoilers, but not really for the plot)
There is not much to say about Iron Man except that it was awesome, but you know that already, right? Iron Man 2 is a different topic, sadly. First of all it was not a bad movie. There were some plotlines I enjoyed and some I didn't. Tony was sometimes very awesome and sometimes so very annoying, but overall I liked him very much. And Robert Downey Jr. is just so easy on the eyes that you it's virtually impossible todislike him for extended periods of time ;D
I didn't like the 'replacement actor' of Rhodey nor did I like his storyline very much. Hammer was annoying and downright stupid, but I laughed about him a lot. He was needed for the storyline with Vanko, but I think it was a bit too much and they could have done that a lot better and without Hammer. I loved Vanko's accent and laughed a lot. (And even though the plot was not that thick, thrilling or new, I liked Mickey Rourke as Vanko.) Scarlett Johannson was easy on the eyes, but they could have given her a bit more depth. Her role was small and her fighting was impressive but still unimpressive. Too constructed. (She was only able to take on one guy at a time and that in such an artistic manner that it seemed more constructed than creative.) Pepper Potts was the ever-worrying hero girlfriend we were used to. She too could have gotten a bit more depth, but it didn't hurt that she hadn't because we've known here from the first movie...
Overall I liked Iron Man 2 but it is NOWHERE near as great as the first movie.
A small gimmick that I loved but didn't recognize in the movie was Captain America's shield. At the time I knew it was something important and funny from some Marvel hero (and that Shield agents surprised: Do you know what that is? was pretty much a strong hint and the scene was pretty funny.), but I didn't recognize it until I had a look the wikipedia entry on Captain America today. What I also liked and look forward to is the little trailer they put at the end of the credits showing a digging site, where a hammer is found. Again I could not place the hammer (except that yeah, it was something that belonged to some Marvel hero) but after looking it up I know it to be Thor's hammer. I also know now that Kenneth Brannagh is directing a Thor movie at the moment and that there are in fact comics about a superhero named Thor. I am intrigued and I guess I'll download those comics after seeing the movie at the latest ;D
Oh and the Iron Man 2 soundtrack was really great, but that didn't come as a surprise since the first one was already really good.

Dev Patel as Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender

Looks great!
I don't know if I am going to watch the movie. The 'racefail' is pretty awful on the one hand and on the other - and this is not about politics and rather selfish and superficial - I just don't think I will like it as much as like the cartoon. I won't say it can't be a good movie, but at the moment I just don't feel like watching it. Furthermore the more I think about it the more I come to the conclusion that I don't want to pay anything for a movie that ignores the fact that - shock! gasp! OMFG! - there are no white kids in Avatar, so I guess I won't watch it regardless of how good it might be despite the 'racebending'. So I guess I won't watch it...
Anyway th picture above greeted me today when I went to look something up at IMDB and I liked it very, very much :D

And because I am not eloquent and also not that well-versed on the topic I'll link you to CHAOSBUNNY'S THE LAST AIRBENDER BOYCOTT VIDEO. (Side note: OMG HOW OLD IS SHE?! I am jealous, because I am not half as eloquent and mature, - wow - as she is but surely a houndred years older.)

SNEAKY MISTER ANTHONY HAS ACTUALLY WRITTEN ANOTHER BOOK USING A PEN NAME!! ISN'T IT GRAND? Well maybe this is an old hat for you, but I am certainly very excited and will try to get my hands on it soon. (Which will be in ten years, because the unread books on m shelf are staring at me accusingly and I would like to read some books from there before aquiring new ones...) Maybe I'll buy it anyway. It certainly falls under the same category as the Sook: Need it because it's the Sook/Chrestomanci/..../Mark Anthony.
I definitely need a reading list for bookblogs and... oh yeah some interesting bookblogs to read ;D

And to show you my newest musical obsession (obtained through yet another great Grey's Anatomy episode, the show has a way with music ♥):

I've been listening to it since three hours or so, that song is pure addiction!

THE BIG BAD INTERNET AND THE EVEN BIGGER AND BADDER FANS AND WRITERS OF FANFICTION
(via [livejournal.com profile] dragonaph and [personal profile] lian.)

Diana Gabaldon ranted about fanficton in her blog and the fandom couldn't help but respond. And sometimes in a most awesome ways, like [personal profile] bookshop did saying she's done explaining to people why fanfic is okay.
I can understand people not liking fanfiction, especially about their own characters. T. for examples does not like it, saying that she mixes up canon and fanon too easily and that she wants to read only what the original author wrote about their characters. I can understand that, but I don't share T's oponion because I myself have always been someone who reads a lot of things into various texts. And therefore it was a real revelation for me when I discovered that I was not alone. (And began to read fanfictions like crazy. I haven't stopped until now and I don't think I ever will.)
Anyway, the discussion brought some interesting insights, at least to me who is fairly new to all the meta stuff, and especially [personal profile] bookshop had some interesting points to raise.

Fans are most amazing and I would be flattered that people write about characters I invented. I might not read fanfiction about my own works, but I'd surely encourage it. (I am sure that it would be most amazing to see the pairings people come up with and how I would laugh about them, because in my head it my head character A and character B do not work together at all... ;D Or I might gain new insights into my own world and the ambiguity of some ideas, I was not able to see on my own.)

Fine, no problem... but surely you can accept that not everyone is like you, and that being different from you is not necessarily the same as being *wrong*?

The Internet in a Nutshell ;D

I have a seminar called The Vampire in Anglophone Cultures – Transformations of a Monster at university this semester and th lecturer started her introduction with a video from College Humor to show that there have been many different kinds of vampire adaptations since the original Dracula. IT'S HILARIOUS WATCH IT! (Bill! And Edward and Dracula....AND EVEN COUNT COUNT ♥!)

The new Kate Nash album My Best Friend Is You is great! I just CAN'T stop listening to Do Wah Doo (& watch the video! Kate Nash is just so cute and funny.)

I'll just read a book instead.
I don't care if we're just friends.
I can hang out with myself
I'm old enough now to pretend.
I'll just read a book instead.

I want to share one of my mother's cabaret artist/comedian with you: Horst Evers! (German only, I'm afraid.)
Please watch THIS video. The 'bread from yesterday' is so incredible hilarious ♥ It is far at the end of the video, but if you have some time, please watch the whole thing. It is just THAT good.
(I would also strongly recommend: FETTER AUSDRUCK)

While rewatching Lucky Star, because it is glorious and also the best thing to watch when you want to relax and not thing about too much about coherent plotline(s), I came across MY FAVOURITE LUCKY STAR SCENE EVER!! (Which is a lie, because I love most every scene in that damn show... ♥!!) I found it incredibly hilarious, when I first saw it but this time I looked for the cm WHERE KONATA'S ANTICS COME FROM and think it's even more hilarious now :D

And on the radio
You hear November Rain
That solo's awful long
But it's a good refrain
You listen to it twice

Legend of the Guardians
based on the books Guardians of Ga’Hoole
TRAILER
Beauitful animation! The story does not seem that new, but the protagonists sure are, OWLS! Never had that before and it looks amazing. The voice acting seemed pretty neat too, I liked it very much :) Lookin' forward to that one ♥

RAPUNZEL, uhm sorry it's TANGLED now. (Nice change :D)
Here the first teaser: TANGLED TEASER
It does not reveal... anything much, but I do like Rapunzel's voice and she's going to be the first animated Princess, right? I was a bit sad that this movie is not a 'real' Disney animation like The Princess and the Frog has been, but now I am not so sure anymore. I have seen glorious pictures of backgrounds and now I am looking forward to Tangled, too. (Especially after How To Train Your Dragon blew my mind ♥!)

thecartdriver_feed is the feed for http://thecartdriver.com/. Yet another animeblog, I know ;D

Of course it serves as a reclist too, since I added only the fanfictions I especially enjoyed.

Should you want to compare the other song of the game too, HERE IS SILVER STAR STORY'S WIND'S NOCTURNE and HERE IS THE SILVER STAR HARMONY VERSION OF WIND'S NOCTURNE (I haven't listened to the latter, because I want to see and hear it at the appropriate time in the game :D)
Singing along sure brings good memories. I adored this game and it is still one of my favourite 'fairytales' if you want. And of course one of my favourite JRPGs too.

Seen some time ago and the best movie I have seen in ages, most beautiful in every way ♥ ♥ ♥
I loved it from the beginning to the heartbreaking and heartwarming end ♥!
(The first movie where I enjoyed 3D too.)

I was reading From Girl to Woman: American Women's Coming of Age Narratives yesterday for university. As to be expected he author talks about Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, which you may know from the anime series Eine fröhliche Familie (Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari), if you haven't heard the title before. I watched and adored the anime when I was little and even though I did not indentify with Jo at the time (she was too old for me back then), I deeply admired her. She was some kind of role model I guess, even though I did not think of it that way, because I felt more than thought when watching series or reading books. (I stll do that most of the time today...) Anyway, reading Christy Rishoi's short analysis of Little Women deeply disappointed me (➝ the ending of the novel) and now I don't know if I ever want to read the actual book. DAMN.
(But other than that I enjoyed reading From Girl to Woman.)

Summary: Edward Elric from various points of view.

He began babbling about how the pain 'wasn't as bad as the first time around' and that 'Winry did a great job the first time around, but when I crossed the gate, the entire arm got lost and we had to redo it' and nonsense. He spoke of a little brother and growled out something about a horse (mustang, was it?). Eventually, his speech lost all coherency and the remaining work was done in silence.

Very short chapters, wonderfully written and as canon as a crossover can be IMHO. (I can see the Harry Potter characters seeing Edward in the various ways they do.)

At seventeen, Tezuka understood many things. He knew what his feelings for Fuji were and what they meant. And he knew unspoken, unrequitted feelings were supposed to hurt, but it didn't work for him that way.

Since it's a really short story any other excerpt would give too much away and that would spoil the fun.
What immediately springs to my mind when I think about this story is the intimacy and the sensibility that comes across. This story has everything I love about Fuji and Tezuka. It perfectly describes that the way they complement like no one else can.

Summary: When the Enterprise is asked to transport Vulcan colonists to their new home, Spock Prime comes with them. His presence changes everything – even the things Jim isn’t sure he wants to change.

I loved this the first time and I only fell deeper in love while re-reading it.
I liked the style and loved the characterisations. Spot on and in character. And there's also a lot of humour to boot. The story is mostly told from Kirk's point of view (although it's not a first-person perspective) and it's really gorgeous. It made me giddy while reading it, I was dying because of the thrill and because I just couldn't get enough of Breaking Points.

Character/Pairing: Gaila/Sulu
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: None. (Not really.)
Status: Oneshot
Summary:
Gaila hard and cynical, unwilling to trust. The person I imagine she was not long after her escape.

Oh, just continuing the Gaila love here, really. This is as faboulous as the first one but with much more - as a friend called it - 'Orion politics' and insight into Gaila's character aswell as her past. And Sulu is a a proper - charming - gentleman.

Fandom: Hikaru no Go
Title: The Art of New Games
Pairing: Hikaru/Akira
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: The author doesn't warn, so I think there's no need for a spoiler warning.
Status: Oneshot
Summary: Touya really doesn't think his clothes are all that bad. Shindou and photographers disagree. Touya wouldn't really care, except that there are advantages to humoring Shindou once in a while.

By the time the interview has sputtered to a halt, however, he's feeling rather like there is Go and there is People Who Do Not Play Go, and maybe it's not a good idea to try to explain the one to the other. At least the photographer seems happy. Maybe the article will just have a lot of pictures and a brief mention of Shindou's imaginary snowboarding.

'FANCY BEING ABLE TO LAUGH AT SOMETHING IN FRENCH'
Last Friday I fell in love. Hard and fast and once again with a boy. When it comes to fiction it seems that I succumb to charming young lads extremely easy. (Genius, Edmund, Briar, Takeru,...) Cat Chant was able to make me love him in a matter of seconds and "Charmed Life" is a truly wonderful book, I enjoyed it very much.

I was keen to read Dianna Wynne Jones Chronicles of the Chrestomanci because I love [livejournal.com profile] halcyonjazz's fanarts. (I enjoyed Chrestomanci's clothes as much in the book as I do in the fanarts. He is such a fashion victimfancy dresser.)

And since I got permission from [livejournal.com profile] halcyonjazz to use this beautiful fanart to make icons, I might as well share them with you.

(If you use one of them, please credit [livejournal.com profile] halcyonjazz as the artist!)

FANFICTION & FANDOM DILEMMA:
It is certainly not a good idea to search at fanfiction.net for fanfiction, because even though there are many well-written pieces there's twice as much crap. Still what do you do when you crave Digimon in the middle of the night?

Why is the fandom dead? Scratch that, but why are there so few fanfictions? Good ones? And finished ones? And I am not even talking about good Daisuke/Takeru fic, there simply isn't any, but Taichi/Yamato...? DARN.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH KATY PERRY AT LAST:

Especially the song with Timbaland has been running through my for days now... ♥

I'll never be the same if we ever meet again,
Won't let you get away if we ever meet again,
This freefall's got me sold kiss me all night don't ever let me go,
Ill never be the same if we ever meet again

If we ever meet again,
I'll have so much more to say,
If we ever meet again,
I won't let you go away

TODAY'S ROUND UP
METAFANDOM
A rant about slash, subtext metatext an solidarty by [personal profile] eumelia.

"I know you care for him as much as I do": about homoerotic subtext and slash and what it might mean for the heteronormative world if their heroes turned out to be gay. by [personal profile] bookshop.

Somehow I was reminded of the gorgeous article Your Friends Are Not Watching the Same Show You Are (And That's Okay). I also think that what [personal profile] resa answered to my question "Are there books/games/comics/... you don't want a movie adaptation of?":

Some future movie will probably prove me wrong some day, but right now I think there is none because I draw a clear line between books and movie adaptions thereof. Both media have advantages and disadvantages and if a movie adaption can use the advantages of being a movie well, chances are pretty high that I'll like it - even if it's completely different from the original book.

"Original"... Remember what I told you about translation in this guest lecture I heard last week (about the Human Rights)? If you see it like that, a book is nothing else than the realization of an idea in somebody's head; he has an idea and puts it, that is, translates it into a work of art. Funny thing to talk about "the original book" in the strictest sense then, right? It begins as an abstract idea and I would argue that's what we as readers or movie watchers translate it back to when we read or watch it.

And if I get a different kind of idea when I translate a movie adaption than from the book? It doesn't destroy the idea I got from the book first. I might not like it as much or even not at all, but I think translation, might it be text translation, from one language to another; might it be cultural translation, from one custom of one culture to another; or the translation from one medium to another - we need it, now more than ever. Even if it totally fails, because that's what makes us aware of the process. And that's important, right?

STRANGE THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN NARNIA
NARNIA! NARNIA! I forgot that 2010 is the year of the Dawn Treader movie. Anyway, I would like Caspian without a beard better but Edmund looks positively cute. Oh no, I am fairly sure my obsession with Skandar Keynes will start all over again this year...

IMDb says that I will have to wait until December to watch the movie, but... I CAN'T WAIT!

THOUGHTS ON AVATAR
I finally was able to watch Avatar.
During the movie I was taking notes like most of the time when I watch a movie, because you can't talk alll the way through a movie, even though you have lots of interesting thoughts and because I have the memory capacity of a gold fish. (I write down almost everything I need or don't need to remember...) When I watch a movie I try to capture my 'first impressions' and ideas on paper, it's fun and I am able to catch little details I forget really soon after leaving the cinema... Goldfish, really!
This is definitely lacking important observations that can be made about Avatar and I could say much more about the movie, but I don't particularly feel like it. I just didn't want my notes to go to waste, so I decided to type them up and make an entry.
If you want to read another interesting entr about Avatar, I suggest reading [personal profile] schattenstern's entry, which is interesting and offers some nifty insights on how to improve the movie.

Now onto the rather messy and not at all coherent (but chronological!) notes on Avatar: )
